Program Description

The English Test Preparation Course focuses on developing essential reading, speaking, listening, and writing communication skills in English to help students improve their language proficiency and prepare for English language assessments.

Classroom activities support students in developing effective reading and writing strategies through community, workplace, and academic contexts. Learners strengthen their English language skills while integrating Skills for Success, including working with others, computer and document use, thinking skills, and continuous learning, along with intercultural communication skills.

General Admission Requirements
  • B.C. secondary school graduation, or equivalent; or
  • Be 19 years of age or older and out of secondary school for at least one year as of the first day of classes.
English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements
  • Meet the College’s English language proficiency requirements.
Additional Admission Requirement
  • Successful completion of a College Interview.

Upon completion of this English Language Program, successful students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to apply English communication skills in academic, workplace, and everyday contexts through the following activities:

  • Interacting Effectively: Read and write narratives, take notes during informal presentations, read graphs, and interpret information effectively.
  • Journaling: Read workplace-related articles on topics such as stress management, take notes, write summaries, and create journal entries using appropriate written communication skills.
  • Applying for Positions: Prepare a skills inventory, compare resume-writing resources, complete job application forms, and write professional cover letters.
  • Listening to Lectures: Identify and retell key information from lectures, understand scientific and technological topics, and present ideas using group concept maps.
  • Conducting Questionnaires: Participate in group discussions, understand presentations on environmental topics, and provide suggestions for addressing problems.
  • Conducting Focus Groups: Understand the steps involved in conducting focus groups, analyze discussions, and develop skills to moderate group conversations.
  • Demonstrating Processes: Understand instructional materials related to production processes, present process information clearly, and communicate effectively when arranging site visits.
  • Analyzing Media: Analyze and interpret media content, including video advertisements and public service announcements, to understand messages and information.
  • Participating in Meetings: Understand effective meeting practices, solve problems in formal meeting settings, and participate in professional role-play activities.

Completion Requirements*

Students must achieve a minimum overall grade of 70% or higher to successfully complete the program.

Delivery Method(s)

The program is delivered through the following methods:

In-Class Instruction:
100% of instructional hours are delivered in a classroom or learning environment where instructors and students share the same physical space. Students participate in face-to-face instruction, discussions, and practical learning activities.

Distance Education:
100% of instructional hours, excluding work experience hours (if applicable), are delivered remotely from a B.C. location through online learning platforms.

Online Learning Format (if applicable):
Online instruction is delivered through synchronous learning , where students attend virtual classes in real time with instructors and classmates.
