Program Description
The Electrician Program prepares students with the knowledge and skills required to inspect, test, install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, equipment, and controls. Electricians work in a variety of environments including residential, commercial and industrial settings ensuring electrical systems operate safely and efficiently.
Admission Requirements
General Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements to enroll in the Electrician Training Program:
- Technical Training Requirement: Applicants must complete 40 weeks of technical electrical training as part of the program requirements over a 4-year period.
- Work-Based Training Requirement: Applicants must complete 6,000 hours of work-based training to gain hands-on experience and develop practical electrical skills in a workplace environment.
Applicants should demonstrate the ability to develop and apply the following skills:
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze electrical systems, identify issues, and apply problem-solving skills to complete electrical tasks safely.
- Curious Skills: Ability to learn new electrical technologies, explore solutions, and understand electrical systems and equipment.
- Independent Skills: Ability to work independently, manage tasks, and complete electrical work efficiently and safely.
- Logical Skills: Ability to apply logical thinking when troubleshooting, installing, and maintaining electrical systems.
- Persistent Skills: Ability to remain focused and committed when handling complex electrical tasks and resolving technical challenges.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Read and Interpret Electrical Drawings: Read and interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, and electrical code specifications to support safe and accurate electrical installations.
- Install Electrical Components: Install electrical components and systems using appropriate tools, techniques, and industry standards.
- Repair and Replace Electrical Components: Identify, replace, and repair electrical components to maintain safe and efficient electrical systems.
- Maintain Electrical Records: Create and maintain accurate maintenance records to support electrical system tracking and documentation.
- Test Electrical Equipment: Test electrical equipment and systems by measuring current, voltage, and resistance to ensure proper operation and safety compliance.
Additional Information
Trade Qualifier Certification Pathway
Individuals with extensive experience in the electrical trade may be eligible to challenge the certification exam as a Trade Qualifier and obtain certification without completing a traditional apprenticeship program.
Before applying, applicants should ensure they meet the following requirements:
- Have the required hands-on work experience hours and demonstrate experience across the required scope of electrical trade tasks.
- Provide valid work references who can verify previous and/or current electrical work experience. References may be contacted by phone as part of the verification process.
- Ensure current and previous employers can confirm employment details. Verification may involve contact with company owners, Human Resources representatives, managers, or supervisors.
- After approval, applicants must schedule and successfully complete the certification exam and practical assessment (if required) within the approved timeframe.
The Trade Qualifier pathway provides experienced electrical professionals with an opportunity to have their skills and knowledge assessed and achieve certification through the challenge exam process.
