Program Description
Brief Course Description
This French Proficiency (CEFR C2) course is designed for advanced learners aiming to master French at a near-native level. Using authentic resources and communicative learning activities, learners refine their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while developing advanced vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and sophisticated communication strategies.
By the end of the course, learners will understand virtually all spoken and written French, communicate with confidence and precision, and use French effectively in academic, professional, and specialized environments.
A benchmark for progression via CEFR is as follows:

Course Prerequisites
No previous knowledge of French is required. This course is specifically designed for absolute beginners who want to learn French from the basics and develop a strong foundation in the language.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following admission requirements:
- B.C Secondary School Graduation: Completion of British Columbia secondary school graduation or an equivalent credential.
- Mature Student Admission: Applicants who are 19 years of age or older and have been out of secondary school for at least one year as of the first day of classes may also be eligible for admission.

• Understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction
of concrete needs in French.
• Introduce oneself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where
one lives, people one knows, and things one has.
• Interact in a simple way provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to
help.
Reception — Listening and Reading

• Recognise familiar words and very basic phrases concerning oneself, one’s family, and immediate
concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.
• Follow speech that is very slow and carefully articulated, with long pauses, to assimilate meaning.
• Understand familiar names, words, and very simple sentences on notices, posters, signs, and in
catalogues.
• Understand very short, simple texts a single phrase at a time, picking up familiar names, words, and
basic phrases.
• Understand short, simple messages such as those found on postcards.
• Follow short, simple written directions (e.g., how to get from one place to another).
Interaction — Spoken and Written

• Interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat or rephrase things at a
slower rate of speech and help formulate what the learner is trying to say.
• Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics (e.g.,
personal identity, family, daily routine, local surroundings).
• Make introductions and use basic greeting and leave-taking expressions.
• Establish basic social contact using the simplest everyday polite forms: greetings, farewells, saying
please, thank you, and sorry.
• Handle numbers, quantities, cost, and time in simple transactional exchanges.
• Write a short, simple postcard (e.g., holiday greetings) and fill in forms with personal details such as
name, nationality, and address.
Production — Spoken and Written

• Produce simple, mainly isolated phrases about people and places.
• Use simple phrases and sentences to describe where one lives and people one knows.
• Describe oneself, what one does, and where one lives.
• Write simple isolated phrases and sentences about oneself and familiar topics.
• Read a very short, rehearsed statement (e.g., to introduce a speaker or propose a toast).
Qualitative Aspects of Spoken Language Use

• Range: Deploy a very basic repertoire of words and simple phrases related to personal details and
particular concrete situations.
• Accuracy: Show limited control of a few simple grammatical structures and sentence patterns in a
memorised repertoire.
• Fluency: Manage very short, isolated, mainly pre-packaged utterances, with pausing to search for
expressions and to repair communication.
• Interaction: Ask and answer questions about personal details; interact in a simple way, with
communication dependent on repetition, rephrasing, and repair.
• Coherence: Link words or groups of words with very basic linear connectors like “et” (and) or “puis”
(then).

Students must achieve a minimum overall grade of 70% or higher to successfully complete the program.

In-Class Instruction:
100% of instructional hours are delivered in a classroom or learning environment where instructors and students share the same physical space. Students participate in face-to-face instruction, discussions, and practical learning activities.
Distance Education:
100% of instructional hours, excluding work experience hours (if applicable), are delivered remotely from a B.C. location through online learning platforms.
Online Learning Format (if applicable):
Online instruction is delivered through synchronous learning , where students attend virtual classes in real time with instructors and classmates.
