Live-in Caregiver/Home Support Worker

Program Description
The Live-in Caregiver certificate program equips learners with the skills and competence to provide essential physical, psychological and social support to vulnerable individuals. The breadth of topics covered in the program will help prepare graduates to work with various groups of individuals including group homes and day service programs. The caregiver will be able to gain essential skills, including knowledge of Canadian Culture, interpersonal communication and organization skills.
After the completion of this program, graduates will be able to work as: live-in caregivers, personal support workers, home care aids and assistants.
* This program is not equivalent to, or recognized as, a BC Health Care Assistant Program. Gradutes of this program are not eligible to be registered with the BC Care Aid & Community Health Worker Registry.

Admission Requirements
General Admission Requirements
High school diploma, General Education Development (GED), or BC Dogwood Diploma.
Minimum age of 19 for applicants without a high school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
English proficiency, either through prior education at grade 10 level or higher or by passing an English language assessment (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent). Adequate English language skills are essential for success, as the program is taught in English.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
Assist clients in dealing with personal and social problems
Interview clients to obtain case histories and background information
Prepare intake reports
Assess clients’ progress
Maintain good working relationships with other social service agencies
Assist clients with daily physical activities and managing medications
Demonstrate effective communication within their professional environments

In-class instruction: 100% hours of instruction delivered in a classroom or other setting, where instructors share the same physical space as students.
Distance education: 100% hours of instruction, excluding work experience hours, if applicable, delivered remotely from a BC location.

Synchronous, meaning students attend classes virtually in ‘real time’ with instructors and classmates.
